Course Description:

Welcome to World Core! This class will devote much time to learning the skills that are associated with the study of modern world history and becoming a successful writer. These skills are used in daily life and will be needed for college courses. Additionally, they align with the new Common Core Standards. The class will also give students a better understanding of the past, geography, culture, and economics as it relates to World History. The purpose of studying such material is so students can link the past with the present in order to grasp why events occurred the way they did and why things are the way they are today.

Necessary Materials (Bring everyday):

  • Handouts

  • 3-ring binder with paper and dividers

  • Pens/pencils

Grading Policy:

I have instituted an assessment and grading policy that is comprised of the following categories:

  1. Homework and Classwork                                     (10%)

  2. Participation                                                            (5%)

  3. Tests and quizzes                                                  (30%)

  4. Long term projects and writing assignments          (35%)

  5. Final                                                                        (20%)

Homework and Classwork:

will always be collected in class and will consist of a variety of assignments including warm-ups, class activities, group work, etc. All assignments are posted on the class website including lectures, audio books, readings, etc. If you are absent check the website before you come talk to me.

Tests and Quizzes:

will be more heavily weighted and will assess the skills and material learned in class. These tests and quizzes will take a variety of forms: multiple choice, fill in the blank, short answer, essay, etc.

Long Term Projects and Writing Assignments:

Students will spend much time and put in much effort to such assignments. Students will receive a grade for each assignment, but if students do not receive at least a “70%” then they will have the opportunity to do revisions on that project or piece of writing until a C (70%) is reached, unless it was originally plagiarized.

Academic integrity:

Plagiarism or cheating, whether intentional or not, on any assignment, will result in a “0” for that assignment and a referral as dictated by school policy. During the first few days of class, students will receive a multitude of information about plagiarism and how I will check for it on assignments. For further information, refer to the MVHS planner.

Extra credit:

will be assigned throughout the semester and students will have multiple opportunities to receive extra credit through a variety of assignments.

Tardies and Absences:

To be considered on time, students must be seated, when the bell rings, with all necessary materials on their desk. For the first two tardies students will be required to come in at lunch or after school to clean desks. A third tardy in any one quarter will result in a detention. A fourth tardy will result in a referral as well as a call home, as mandated by school policy.

Make-up work is the responsibility of the student. In the event of an excused absence the student must check the classroom website (www.codyowens.wix.com/codyowens) to get the missed work and the student is required to make up the missed work in 3 days.

Rules and Procedures

Additionally all school rules will be enforced at all times including attendance, dress code, and electronic devices. Students will be expected to show respect, at all times, towards other students, teachers, guests and the learning environment. The only language allowed in class is academic – no racist, homophobic, sexist, or vulgar language will be allowed. Upon breaking any of the agreed upon norms or school rules students will receive a warning on the 1st offense. For the 2nd offense students will be asked to leave the room and will complete a reflective assignment which will be accompanied with a call home. For the 3rd offense students will be referred to the administration as well as receive a call home.

Permission Slip from parents:

The slip you are signing also acts as a permission slip for an IN-CLASS viewing of parts of the movie Saving Private Ryan during our WWII unit.

The films rated “R” and contains explicit violence. The violence is meant to show realistic recreations of the actual, historic landing at Omaha Beach. Additionally we will be covering topics of war and genocide throughout the year. We will be analyzing photographic evidence and personal accounts of these events in history. While these sources are not overtly explicit they will not stray away from showing how damaging these events were.
